THE CRATE — PART 3

I stood in front of the garage door, completely frozen.

On the other side was Sarah.

I could hear her breathing.

“Mark…”

Her voice was shaking.

“Please. Don’t open the door.”

I looked down at Ella.

She was holding onto my shirt with both hands.

“Daddy, please don’t.”

But I couldn’t walk away.

Not anymore.

I had spent the entire day believing that Sarah was the person hurting my daughter.

Now she was locked inside my garage, begging me not to open the door.

Something wasn’t right.

I grabbed the spare key from the kitchen drawer.

My hand was shaking as I put it into the lock.

“Mark!”

Sarah screamed again.

“Listen to me!”

I stopped.

“Why are you in there?”

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Because Daniel is here.”

My heart dropped.

“Where?”

“Behind you.”

I turned around.

Nobody was there.

Then the garage door suddenly rattled.

I pulled Ella behind me.

A loud bang came from inside.

“Mark, OPEN THE DOOR!”

I unlocked it.

The garage door swung open.

Sarah was standing in the corner.

Her hair was messy.

Her face was covered in tears.

But she wasn’t alone.

Daniel was there.

He was standing several feet behind her.

And he was holding a small black bag.

The moment he saw me, he froze.

“Mark…”

I stepped in front of Ella.

“Stay away from my daughter.”

Daniel slowly raised his hands.

“You’ve got it all wrong.”

I didn’t believe him.

“You’ve been coming to my house.”

“I was trying to warn you.”

“About what?”

Daniel looked at Sarah.

She shook her head.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

Daniel looked back at me.

“Sarah didn’t put Ella in that crate because she wanted to punish her.”

I stared at him.

“Then why?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Because she was trying to keep her safe.”

I felt like the entire world had stopped.

“What are you talking about?”

Sarah started crying.

“Mark, someone had been watching the house.”

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

“I found out three weeks ago.”

Daniel opened the black bag.

Inside was a stack of photographs.

He handed them to me.

The first photograph showed our house.

The second showed me leaving for work.

The third showed Ella playing in the backyard.

Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

The fourth photograph showed Ella standing beside the black crate.

The photograph had been taken from outside our property.

Someone had been watching her.

Someone had been close enough to take pictures.

I looked at Sarah.

“Who?”

She couldn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“A man named Victor.”

I had never heard the name before.

Daniel explained that Victor had been connected to someone Sarah knew years ago.

Sarah finally spoke.

“He threatened me.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because he said he’d hurt you if I did.”

I stared at her.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I was terrified.”

I looked at the crate in the backyard through the open garage.

“So you locked Ella inside?”

Sarah nodded.

“I thought it was the only way to keep her out of sight.”

I couldn’t understand.

“Why didn’t you just keep her inside the house?”

“Because Victor had been watching the house.”

She wiped her tears.

“He knew our routine. He knew when you left. He knew when I took Ella outside.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I told Sarah to stay inside and contact the police.”

“But she didn’t,” I said.

Sarah looked at the floor.

“I was scared.”

Daniel continued.

“She thought if Ella stayed hidden in the crate, anyone watching from outside wouldn’t see her playing in the yard.”

I looked at Sarah.

“You made our daughter believe she was being punished.”

Sarah began sobbing.

“I know.”

“I made a terrible mistake.”

Ella suddenly spoke.

“But you told me Daddy wouldn’t believe me.”

Sarah looked at her.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I was wrong.”

Ella stepped closer to me.

I put my arm around her.

Then Daniel said something that changed everything.

“There’s one more thing.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He pulled out his phone.

“I found the person who was taking those photographs.”

He showed me a picture.

My stomach dropped.

It wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t some stranger.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been inside our house.

Someone who had access to our family.

Someone I had trusted.

I stared at the screen.

“No…”

Sarah whispered:

“I tried to tell you.”

I looked at her.

“Who is that?”

She didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“Your brother.”

My heart sank.

My own brother had been watching my daughter.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

“Who is this?”

A man’s voice finally came through.

“You should have left the garage closed.”

I froze.

Ella grabbed my hand.

The voice continued.

“Now you know too much.”

The call ended.

I immediately called the police.

Within minutes, officers arrived.

Daniel handed them everything he had collected.

Photographs.

Messages.

Recordings.

Dates.

Locations.

Everything.

And suddenly the truth began coming together.

Sarah hadn’t been trying to hurt Ella.

She had been terrified.

She had made a terrible decision.

She had turned the crate into a hiding place…

but in doing so, she had made her own daughter feel like she was being punished.

And that mistake had nearly destroyed our family.

The police took Daniel and Sarah inside to explain everything.

I stayed outside with Ella.

She sat on my lap.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Am I in trouble?”

I hugged her tightly.

“No.”

“Did I do something bad?”

I felt tears forming in my eyes.

“No, Ella.”

I kissed the top of her head.

“You did nothing wrong.”

She looked toward the backyard.

“Will you throw the crate away?”

I looked at it.

That black crate had become a symbol of everything we had been through.

I nodded.

“Tomorrow.”

She smiled for the first time in days.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

But just as I thought it was finally over, one of the police officers came outside.

He looked serious.

“Mr. Mark?”

“Yes?”

“We need to talk.”

My heart sank again.

“What happened?”

He looked at the photographs.

“There’s something we found that you need to see.”

He handed me a photograph.

I stared at it.

It was a picture of our house.

Taken the same day Ella had been inside the crate.

But there was something in the background.

Something I hadn’t noticed before.

A second vehicle.

Parked across the street.

And the officer said:

“Your brother wasn’t working alone.”

I looked at Ella.

Then back at the photograph.

The nightmare wasn’t over.

Not yet.
