THE CRATE — PART 2

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Ella was finally resting in her room, but every few minutes I found myself standing outside her door just to make sure she was okay.

I kept hearing the same sentence over and over in my head.

“Daddy… she does this every time.”

Every time.

Those two words wouldn’t leave me alone.

I had spent the entire evening trying to convince myself that there had to be some explanation. Maybe I had misunderstood what happened in the backyard. Maybe Ella was frightened and confused.

But deep down, I knew there was more.

The next morning, I sat beside Ella at the kitchen table.

She barely touched her pancakes.

“Sweetheart,” I said gently, “can you tell Daddy what happened yesterday?”

She looked down at her plate.

Then she looked toward the hallway.

“Is Sarah here?”

“No,” I told her. “She’s not here.”

Ella’s little shoulders relaxed.

She reached across the table and grabbed my hand.

“She told me not to tell you.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did she tell you?”

Ella was quiet for several seconds.

“She said you wouldn’t believe me.”

I felt a cold wave run through me.

“Believe you about what?”

Ella’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said I was bad.”

I pulled her into my arms.

“You are not bad. You hear me? None of this is your fault.”

She nodded against my chest.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“The crate.”

I looked at her.

“What crate?”

She pointed toward the backyard.

“The black one.”

I immediately remembered the large dog crate sitting on the grass.

I had thought it was just an old prop Sarah had brought home.

But Ella told me otherwise.

“She made me sit inside it.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“When you went to work…”

She paused.

“She would put me inside and tell me to stay there.”

I didn’t know what to say.

I wanted to believe there was some mistake.

But Ella continued.

“Sometimes she closed the door.”

I stood up so quickly that my chair nearly fell backward.

I walked outside.

The crate was still there.

I stared at it for a long moment.

Then I noticed something I hadn’t seen the day before.

There were small scratches near the bottom of the door.

I crouched down.

My hands started shaking.

I ran my fingers across the marks.

They weren’t random.

They were little lines.

As if someone had repeatedly tried to pull the door open.

I looked back toward the house.

Ella was standing in the doorway.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest.

“Daddy?”

I immediately went back to her.

“You’re safe.”

She nodded.

But I knew I couldn’t simply ignore what she had told me.

That afternoon, I called Sarah.

She answered calmly.

“Mark?”

I didn’t waste any time.

“Why was Ella inside that crate?”

There was silence.

Then she laughed nervously.

“What are you talking about?”

“Ella told me.”

Another silence.

“She’s six, Mark. She imagines things.”

I clenched my jaw.

“She said you locked her inside.”

Sarah’s voice changed.

“You’re seriously going to believe a child over me?”

I looked at Ella.

She was watching me from across the room.

“Yes,” I said.

Sarah hung up.

That was the moment I knew our marriage was over.

But I still didn’t understand why she had done it.

And then I remembered something.

A few weeks earlier, Ella had started refusing to stay alone with Sarah.

I had assumed it was just a phase.

Every time I left the house, Ella would suddenly become anxious.

“Daddy, don’t go.”

I thought she was simply becoming more attached to me.

Now I realized she had been trying to tell me something.

I opened the security camera app on my phone.

Our backyard camera automatically stored several days of footage.

I had never bothered to check it.

I scrolled backward.

My hands were trembling.

There it was.

Sarah.

Standing beside the crate.

Then another recording.

Sarah opening the door.

Ella walking toward it.

Then another.

My daughter sitting inside.

I watched in horror as Sarah closed the door.

I couldn’t breathe.

But then I noticed something strange.

Sarah wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t yelling.

She wasn’t even looking at Ella.

She was looking directly at the camera.

As if she knew exactly where it was.

I paused the video.

Why would she look at the camera?

I watched another recording.

Same thing.

She would put Ella inside the crate…

Then look directly at the camera.

My mind started racing.

Maybe she wanted me to see it.

Maybe she wanted me to know.

But why?

I continued watching.

Then I saw something I hadn’t expected.

A second person appeared in the background.

A man.

He walked through our side gate.

I didn’t recognize him.

He spoke with Sarah.

They argued.

Then he pointed toward the house.

Sarah shook her head.

The man walked away.

I rewound the footage.

Again.

And again.

Then I froze.

I recognized the man.

He was someone I had seen before.

Someone from Sarah’s past.

Someone she had told me she hadn’t spoken to in years.

His name was Daniel.

I searched through my phone.

There were several missed calls from an unknown number over the past month.

I had ignored every one.

Then another notification appeared.

A voicemail.

I pressed play.

A man’s voice came through.

“Mark… you don’t know what you’re dealing with.”

I stopped breathing.

The message continued.

“Don’t trust Sarah.”

Then silence.

I listened to it three times.

My mind was spinning.

If Daniel was telling the truth, why had Sarah been putting Ella inside the crate?

Was she hurting my daughter?

Or was she trying to protect her from something?

I didn’t know anymore.

That evening, I sat beside Ella on her bed.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Sweetheart, do you know a man named Daniel?”

Her eyes immediately widened.

That reaction told me everything.

“You’ve seen him?”

She nodded slowly.

“Sarah told me never to talk to him.”

“Did he ever come inside the house?”

Ella shook her head.

“No.”

“Did he ever talk to you?”

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Once.”

My heart started pounding.

“What did he say?”

Ella looked toward her bedroom door.

Then she leaned closer to me.

“He told me to hide.”

“Hide from who?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached under her pillow.

She pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

“Sarah gave me this.”

I unfolded it.

There was only one sentence written on it.

DON’T LET DADDY OPEN THE GARAGE.

I stared at the words.

Then I looked toward the hallway.

The garage door was only a few steps away.

For the first time, I noticed that the door was locked from the inside.

I grabbed the handle.

It wouldn’t move.

I looked at Ella.

“Did Sarah lock this?”

Ella nodded.

“She told me there was something inside.”

My heart was pounding.

I searched the house for the spare key.

Nothing.

Then I heard something.

A faint sound coming from inside the garage.

Three knocks.

I froze.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Ella grabbed my shirt.

“Daddy…”

I put my finger to my lips.

The sound came again.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Someone was inside.

I reached for the phone.

Before I could call anyone, another sound came from the garage.

A woman’s voice.

Quiet.

Shaking.

“Mark…”

I stepped backward.

I knew that voice.

It was Sarah.

But Sarah wasn’t supposed to be anywhere near our house.

She had told me she was staying with a friend.

So why was she locked inside my garage?

I looked at Ella.

She was crying silently.

And then Sarah screamed from behind the door.

“MARK! DON’T OPEN IT!”

I reached for the handle anyway.

Because whatever was inside that garage…

was the reason Sarah had been keeping secrets.

And I was about to find out the truth.
