The little red light on the security camera was still blinking.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The police officer looked up at the camera, then back at Vanessa.

“You said she attacked you?”

Vanessa nodded quickly.

“Yes. She came running in and pushed me for no reason. I was only trying to discipline the child.”

My hands tightened around Lily.

Discipline.

That was the word she chose.

I looked down at my daughter. Her little face was still wet with tears, and there was fake dirt all over her shirt and hair.

I couldn’t understand how Vanessa could stand there and pretend none of it had happened.

The officer walked toward the shed.

“Does that camera record continuously?”

Mark answered quietly.

“Yes.”

Vanessa suddenly looked at him.

“Mark, don’t.”

It was the first time I had seen fear in her eyes.

The officer noticed it too.

“Don’t what?”

Vanessa immediately changed her expression.

“I just mean… there is no reason to waste time watching some stupid camera.”

The officer stared at her.

“Actually, I think there is.”

He took out his phone and contacted another officer.

“Can you help me access the backyard footage?”

Mark walked over to the camera system.

I stayed beside Lily.

My daughter was trembling.

I leaned down and whispered,

“You don’t have to be scared anymore. I’m here.”

She looked into my eyes.

“Mommy… I told her no.”

“I know.”

“She kept telling me I had to call her Mom.”

My heart broke.

I hugged her tighter.

“You never have to call anyone Mom if you don’t want to.”

Behind us, I heard Vanessa sigh.

“This is ridiculous.”

The officer turned toward her.

“Ma’am, please wait.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You don’t understand the situation.”

“Then the camera should help us understand it.”

That sentence silenced her.

A few seconds later, the footage appeared on the screen.

The officer watched the recording from the beginning.

At first, there was nothing unusual.

Lily was playing near the garden.

Grandmother was sitting nearby.

Vanessa walked into the backyard holding a small bucket.

Then the officer paused the footage.

“What time is this?”

Mark looked at the screen.

“About twenty minutes before Sarah arrived.”

The officer pressed play.

We watched Vanessa walk toward Lily.

I could hear Vanessa’s voice coming through the speaker.

“Call me Mom.”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Say it.”

“No.”

Then Vanessa’s voice became louder.

“You live in this house because I allow it.”

I felt my stomach turn.

The officer looked at Vanessa.

She immediately spoke over him.

“She was being disrespectful.”

The video continued.

Lily backed away.

Vanessa followed her.

Then Lily said something that made everyone in the backyard go silent.

“I want my daddy.”

Vanessa answered,

“Your daddy isn’t coming.”

I looked at Mark.

His face had gone pale.

The footage continued.

Vanessa picked up the bucket.

She moved toward Lily.

Then came the moment I had heard only seconds after entering the backyard.

The bucket tipped.

Soft dirt spilled across the shallow sandbox prop.

Lily screamed.

Grandmother stood up immediately.

The officer paused the video.

Nobody said anything.

Then he rewound it.

He watched it again.

And again.

Finally, he turned toward Vanessa.

“Why did you tell us Sarah attacked you?”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“I was frightened.”

The officer shook his head.

“The video shows you approaching the child.”

Vanessa looked at Mark.

“Tell him.”

Mark didn’t answer.

“Mark!”

He slowly shook his head.

“I don’t know what to say.”

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“You’re my husband.”

“And she’s my daughter.”

The words hit the backyard like a thunderclap.

Vanessa stared at him.

Mark walked toward Lily.

He stopped several feet away, looking at his daughter.

“Lily…”

She hid her face against me.

He swallowed hard.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily didn’t respond.

For the first time, Mark seemed to understand the damage that had been done.

But the officer wasn’t finished.

He looked back at the footage.

“There’s something else.”

I frowned.

“What?”

He pointed toward the screen.

“Look at the timestamp.”

The video showed Vanessa entering the backyard much earlier than we thought.

She wasn’t there for only a few minutes.

She had been outside with Lily for nearly an hour.

The officer continued watching.

Then we saw Vanessa walk toward the shed.

She looked around carefully.

She opened a small storage box.

And pulled something out.

Mark stepped closer.

“What is that?”

The officer paused the video.

Nobody could identify it clearly.

Vanessa suddenly shouted,

“Turn it off!”

The officer immediately looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because that footage has nothing to do with what happened to the child.”

The officer stared at her.

“You just told me the footage was useless.”

Vanessa said nothing.

He played the recording again.

Vanessa walked back toward the house carrying the object.

Then she stopped.

She looked directly at the security camera.

My heart started pounding.

She knew where it was.

She had known all along.

Then something even stranger happened.

Vanessa walked behind the shed.

For almost thirty seconds, she disappeared from view.

When she came back, she was carrying a small black bag.

Mark looked confused.

“I’ve never seen that bag before.”

Vanessa immediately said,

“It’s nothing.”

The officer paused the video.

“Then you won’t mind if we ask about it.”

Vanessa’s face went completely pale.

The officer turned toward Mark.

“Who has access to this shed?”

“Me. Sarah. Vanessa.”

The officer nodded.

Then he looked at the screen again.

“There may be another camera.”

My eyes widened.

“Another camera?”

He pointed toward the far corner of the yard.

“There’s a second lens hidden behind that garden light.”

Vanessa froze.

Mark looked at her.

“You knew about that?”

She didn’t answer.

The officer walked toward the second camera.

I watched Vanessa’s face carefully.

She wasn’t angry anymore.

She wasn’t pretending to be confident.

She looked terrified.

The officer connected the second camera to the system.

The screen flickered.

A new recording appeared.

The timestamp was from earlier that same afternoon.

And this time…

It wasn’t showing Lily.

It was showing Vanessa.

Alone.

Standing behind the shed.

Talking to someone.

We couldn’t hear the audio yet.

The officer turned the volume up.

Static filled the backyard.

Then Vanessa’s voice came through.

“I need you to do something for me.”

My blood ran cold.

A second voice answered.

“Are you sure?”

Vanessa looked around nervously.

“Yes.”

Mark stepped backward.

“Who is she talking to?”

I stared at the screen.

I had no idea.

Then the second voice said something that made Vanessa’s entire face change.

“If Sarah finds out what you did, we’re both finished.”

The video suddenly froze.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Mark looked at Vanessa.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The officer reached for the controls.

“I want to hear the rest.”

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“No!”

The officer stopped.

“Why not?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with panic.

Because whatever was on that recording…

was bigger than the argument in the backyard.

Much bigger.

And I had a terrible feeling that Lily wasn’t the real reason Vanessa had been acting strangely.

The officer pressed play.

The screen flickered again.

And then we heard a name.

My name.

“Sarah…”

I looked at Mark.

Then at Vanessa.

And finally back at the screen.

Someone had been planning something against me.

And the camera had captured every second.

But we still didn’t know who the other person was.

And we didn’t know what Vanessa had asked them to do.

That was the moment I realized…

The hole in my backyard wasn’t the real secret.

The real secret was hiding behind the shed.

And we were only seconds away from finding out who was involved.
