I thought the worst was over when Marcus watched the security footage.

I was wrong.

The footage from that afternoon was only the beginning.

Marcus stood completely still in the middle of the foyer, staring at the phone in his hand. Vivian remained on the floor, her face pale, but she wasn’t crying anymore.

For the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

Not fear for the baby.

Fear of being exposed.

Marcus looked at the security guard.

“Pull every camera from the last seven days.”

The guard hesitated.

“All of them, sir?”

Marcus nodded.

“Every camera. Every hallway. Every room where Vivian has been alone with the baby.”

My heart started pounding.

I knew there was something more.

I had felt it for days.

But every time I tried to tell Marcus, Vivian found a way to make me look like a jealous employee who was trying to destroy their marriage.

She was good at it.

Too good.

The security guard connected the phone to the large television in the living room.

The first recording appeared.

It was from four days earlier.

I was in the kitchen preparing dinner when Vivian walked into the nursery.

The baby was sleeping peacefully.

Vivian looked around before closing the door.

Then she walked toward the crib.

My stomach tightened.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“What is she doing?”

I couldn’t answer.

The footage continued.

Vivian leaned over the crib and reached toward the baby.

She didn’t hurt her.

But she picked her up and carried her toward the opposite side of the room.

Then she placed her somewhere the camera couldn’t clearly see.

The footage ended.

Marcus looked at me.

“Why would she do that?”

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

But deep down, I knew.

There had been other strange moments.

Missing blankets.

A locked nursery door.

The baby suddenly crying whenever Vivian entered the room.

And one night, I had found the baby alone in the hallway.

I had assumed it was an accident.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

The next recording played.

This one was from three nights earlier.

Vivian was standing in the nursery holding the baby.

She looked angry.

She was speaking, but the audio was too low to understand.

Then she suddenly placed the baby down and walked away.

The baby began crying.

Vivian didn’t return.

Instead, she stood outside the door, watching.

I covered my mouth.

I remembered that night.

I had heard the crying.

I had run upstairs.

But when I reached the nursery, Vivian was already there.

She told me the baby had simply woken up.

She had lied.

Marcus turned toward Vivian.

“Why didn’t you tell me any of this?”

Vivian shook her head.

“You’re misunderstanding everything.”

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“Then explain it.”

“I was stressed.”

“That doesn’t explain anything.”

“I was trying to help!”

“You call that helping?”

Vivian stood up slowly.

“You weren’t here, Marcus! You were always working. You don’t know what it was like for me.”

Marcus stared at her.

“You could have asked for help.”

“I DID!”

Her voice echoed through the mansion.

Then suddenly she stopped.

Silence.

I noticed something on the television screen.

A tiny reflection in the corner of one of the recordings.

It looked like Vivian was holding something.

I stepped closer.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at me.

“Go back.”

The security guard rewound the footage.

There it was.

A small object in Vivian’s hand.

It was a key.

My heart dropped.

I knew that key.

It belonged to the locked cabinet in the nursery.

The cabinet Vivian had always told me never to open.

Marcus looked at me.

“What is in that cabinet?”

“I don’t know.”

Vivian suddenly stepped forward.

“Nothing.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Then why are you worried?”

She didn’t answer.

Marcus turned to the security guard.

“Open it.”

Vivian’s expression changed instantly.

“No.”

Marcus stopped.

“What did you say?”

“I said no.”

The security guard walked toward the nursery.

Vivian tried to follow him.

Marcus blocked her path.

“Stay here.”

She stared at him.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

Marcus answered quietly.

“No. I think I’m finally starting to understand.”

The security guard disappeared upstairs.

I stood beside Marcus, my hands trembling.

A few minutes later, we heard footsteps coming down the staircase.

The security guard was carrying a small black box.

Marcus looked at it.

“Where did you find this?”

“In the locked cabinet, sir.”

Vivian’s face went completely white.

Marcus opened the box.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Pictures of the baby.

Pictures of me.

Pictures of Marcus.

And then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

There were photographs of me sleeping.

I couldn’t breathe.

Marcus looked at me.

“Who took these?”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.”

The guard pulled out another item.

A small voice recorder.

Marcus pressed the button.

Vivian’s voice filled the room.

“I can’t let her stay here.”

My heart stopped.

The recording continued.

“She thinks Marcus trusts her more than me.”

Then Vivian’s voice became quieter.

“If she tells him what she’s seen, everything is over.”

Marcus slowly turned toward Vivian.

She backed away.

“That isn’t what it sounds like.”

Marcus didn’t respond.

He pressed the button again.

Another recording played.

This time, Vivian was speaking to someone else.

A man’s voice answered her.

I couldn’t see who he was.

But I recognized the voice.

My eyes widened.

“That’s…”

Marcus looked at me.

“You know him?”

I nodded slowly.

“He came to the house last week.”

“Who?”

I swallowed.

“The man Vivian introduced as her cousin.”

Marcus looked at Vivian.

“Your cousin?”

Vivian said nothing.

The security guard suddenly interrupted.

“Sir…”

He was holding another phone.

“We found something else.”

Marcus took it.

The screen showed a series of messages.

They were between Vivian and the unknown man.

And the final message was only a few hours old.

It said:

“Tonight. Make sure Sophia leaves the house before Marcus finds out.”

My hands went cold.

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Vivian.

And finally at the message.

Suddenly, Vivian smiled.

It wasn’t a nervous smile.

It was calm.

Almost confident.

“You still don’t understand,” she said.

Marcus frowned.

“What don’t I understand?”

Vivian looked directly at me.

“The baby you’re protecting…”

She paused.

“…isn’t the only secret in this house.”

Nobody moved.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

The entire mansion fell into darkness.

I heard the front doors open.

Someone had entered the house.

And from somewhere upstairs…

I heard the nursery door slowly creak open.

I grabbed Marcus’s arm.

“Someone’s upstairs.”

Marcus looked at the security guards.

“Lock every exit.”

Then he looked at me.

“Stay behind me.”

We started walking toward the staircase.

But before we could take the first step, Vivian whispered from behind us:

“You’re already too late.”

I turned around.

She was smiling.

And for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

Vivian hadn’t been trying to hide what happened today.

She had been trying to distract us from something much bigger.

Something that had been happening inside that mansion long before I ever arrived.

And now…

we were finally going to find out what it was.
